1928-29 GE Cleveland Union Terminal Railroad Electrical Manuals Blueprints CUTExceptional two-volume General Electric engineering archive relating directly to the Cleveland Union Terminals Company electrification project, dating principally from 1928–1929. Offered together are a GE Special Instructions: Automatic Switching Equipment binder and a second period General Electric technical binder, both containing specialized electrical engineering documentation associated with the Cleveland Union Terminal system.
The brown Automatic Switching Equipment volume is particularly significant. Its opening material is titled “Automatic Station Control Equipment — Installation, Maintenance and Operation — Instructions GEI-3661 — Reclosing Signal Feeders” and specifically identifies the Cleveland Union Terminal Co., Cleveland, Ohio, with requisitions for Terminal, Collinwood and Linndale stations. The inside cover bears an oval Cleveland Union Terminals Co. / Sept. 23, 1929 / Asst. Elec. Engineer ownership/department stamp.Contents are divided by original index tabs including Contents, Operation, Devices, Installation, Maintenance, Wiring and Supplement. The archive contains technical specifications, operating instructions, component literature and large folding electrical diagrams/blueprints.
Especially noteworthy is a large GE blueprint titled “Automatic Switching Equipment Elementary Diagram” prepared specifically for Cleveland Union Terminals Co., Cleveland, Ohio (Linndale Station) and dated/inspected in May 1929. Another large diagram concerns railway signaling and reclosing/non-reclosing feeder equipment and bears 1928 engineering dates.
The companion GE binder contains additional original engineering documentation associated with the project, including a remarkable February 12, 1929 General Electric proposal addressed to H. D. Jouett, Chief Engineer, Cleveland Union Terminals Co., 1010 Terminal Tower Bldg., Cleveland, Ohio. The proposal discusses electrical apparatus for the Terminal Signal Tower, Air Compressor Plant and Emergency Supply Stations, including switchboards, oil circuit breakers, transformers and related equipment. Other material specifically references railway signal feeder equipment at Collinwood and Linndale and includes period GE instruction sheets such as GEJ-3C for D&W pole-type oil fuse cutouts.
These documents belong to the engineering history of Cleveland Union Terminals' major electrification program. Contemporary sources document GE's involvement in the project, including construction of CUT electric locomotives at GE's Erie Works in 1929. The resulting electrified zone extended approximately 17 route miles between Collinwood and Linndale and incorporated substantial electrical, control and signaling infrastructure.
A highly specialized surviving archive combining Cleveland railroad history, Terminal Tower/Union Terminal history, General Electric engineering, railway electrification, signaling technology and original blueprint material. Offered as the original two-volume group pictured.
