Original October 2, 1920 Mount Airy Mantel and Table Company illustrated letterhead contract from mount airy nc. The large engraved-style factory vignette across the top shows the company’s extensive manufacturing complex, smokestacks, lumber stacks, rail cars and surrounding landscape. The company identifies itself as manufacturers of “High Grade Dining Room and Hall Furniture.”
The two-page contract is with C. W. Utt and concerns lumber from a portion of the Weddell tract of land. It initially specifies 100,000 feet of oak, poplar and chestnut lumber, with provisions concerning sawing, stacking, inspection, grading, payment, hauling and delivery to the company factory.
The document states that the lumber was to be sawed 1-1/8\" thick, stacked in the mill yard and inspected as quantities accumulated. Payment is typed as $15.00 per thousand feet, with a handwritten correction appearing in the text. The second page provides additional terms for handling, stacking and hauling the lumber to the Mount Airy factory.
