1919 RPPC US Soldiers Schoolhouse Germany Occupation Postcard Named Verso: $12.74
This real photo postcard captures a group of four American soldiers posed outdoors in what is identified in handwritten annotation as having been taken in January 1919, in the rear of a schoolhouse. The date places the image in the immediate aftermath of the First World War, consistent with the presence of American occupation forces in the Rhineland. The half-timbered fachwerk building visible at the far left of the frame strongly suggests a German or Central European setting, and the architectural vernacular of the region is a notable feature of the composition. The men are identified in pencil on the verso, reading from left to right: Supply Sergeant Rosie Laraup, Sergeant Harry L. Smith, Corporal Charley Siebert, and Private Mose H. W. The varying ranks and the inclusion of a supply sergeant indicate a typical mixed detachment rather than a single line unit. The annotation further notes that \"the Sun is all a Seventy five (75),\" a remark that likely refers to the temperature or the intensity of the light on the day of the exposure. The image is a classic example of early twentieth-century vernacular military photography, produced as a real photo postcard on developing-out paper with a divided back. The card is unused, with no postage stamp, cancellation mark, or address present; the reverse bears only the pencil inscription and a small inventory notation of \"3-asis\" in the upper right corner. The handwritten date of October 25, 1919, appears in the top right corner of the image side, while the annotation on the verso records the photograph as having been taken in January 1919. The discrepancy between the two dates is worth noting, as it may reflect the date the print was made or inscribed rather than the date of exposure. The soldiers\' appearance, including their uniform cut and the relaxed grouping, offers a glimpse into the everyday experience of occupation duty in the months following the Armistice, and the survival of named identifications on the verso lends the piece genealogical and historical research value for collectors of Great War-era photography.
