On his way to Russia to confer with the late Czar Nicholas II, the veteran warrior died when the cruiser Hampshire was torn apart by an explosion and sank in 15 minutes. The British government blamed a mine for the blast, but reports have persisted ever since that German spies had placed a bomb in the cruiser's magazine. Photo measures 8.25 x 10.25 inches.
