The name \"Sheyenne\" has an interesting origin. It\'s derived from the nearby Sheyenne River which was named after the Cheyenne Indians. The first explorers in the area misspelled the name, thus changing the \"C\" to an \"S\". The city has seen settlers from all parts of the United States and Europe, with most European settlers coming from Scandinavia and Germany.
Close to Sheyenne, you\'ll find the Sheyenne National Grassland. This grassland is located in southeastern North Dakota, comprising 70,180 acres (28,400 ha) of public land amid 64,769 acres (26,211 ha) of privately owned land. The grassland provides habitat for greater prairie chickens in North Dakota as well as several other sensitive species. It offers various recreational opportunities such as hiking, hunting, camping, horseback riding, photography, and backpacking.
