Up for sale is this extremely interesting and unusual antique 1920s German pocket flint striker lighter, attributed to Pirona, beautifully crafted in solid 800 silver with fine enamel decoration.
The striker is ingeniously designed in the form of a miniature book, with a rectangular silver body decorated on the front with geometric cobalt blue and white enamel lines. A suspension ring on the side was intended for carrying the piece as a pendant or, more traditionally, attached to a gentleman's vest or watch chain.
Unlike a conventional petrol lighter, this fascinating device operates as a reusable flint striker or “strike-a-light.” The cylindrical striker, finished with an elegant spherical silver knob, can be completely removed from the top of the case. Its steel striking tip is drawn against the flint strip positioned between the two sides of the book-shaped body, producing a spark for lighting.
This clever system provided a compact and reusable alternative to ordinary matches and is a wonderful example of early 20th-century pocket smoking accessories.
The lower edge is clearly stamped “800”, indicating 800/1000 silver purity. The body is additionally decorated with blue and white enamel, a particularly attractive detail on this miniature utilitarian object.
Based on its construction and comparison with known examples, the piece is attributed to the German manufacturer Pirona and dates to approximately the 1920s. Pirona is known for producing pocket flint strikers in a variety of novelty and figural forms during the first half of the 20th century. As no visible Pirona maker's mark is present on this example, the manufacturer should be considered an attribution.
The striker is in good original antique condition, showing expected surface scratches, patina, tarnishing and signs of use consistent with its age missing flint stipe. The blue and white enamel decoration is well preserved. Importantly, the original removable striker is still present.
