Large lot of 65+ original early 1900s business correspondence from W. S. JENKS, Ranges, Furnaces, Latrobes, Stove Repairs, Hardware, Gas, Gasoline & Oil Stoves, 727 Seventh Street N.W., Washington, D.C.
Most pieces measure approx 8.5\" x 11\". Several are on thin onion-skin carbon copy paper, while the majority are handwritten or typed on the backs of the company’s printed broadside advertisements (“TO OUR CUSTOMERS”).
This appears to be a working archive of outgoing letters from the firm’s Washington, D.C. shop, documenting customer interactions, installation notes, pricing, stove orders, furnace parts, shipments, stock questions, complaints, replacements, and detailed technical information relating to ranges and heating equipment.
Contents include (examples):
• Letters to customers across PA, MD, VA, MI, IL, NY, and others
• Installation instructions, grate measurements, firebox notes
• Lists of parts shipped (doors, grates, panels, castings, oven backs, etc.)
• Carbon-copy correspondence on onion skin
• Handwritten drafts in pencil/ink
• A large group written directly on the versos of printed W. S. Jenks 8.5x11 broadsides
• Several illustrated notations (sketched stove parts, layout diagrams)
• Occasional smudges from carbon paper, working-desk soil, and era handling
Condition: mixed working-archive condition. Toning, edge wear, some scattered stains, occasional pencil fading, a few pages with old burn marks to edges. Still a strong, legible and extensive business correspondence group.
