Up for sale is an authentic, double-sided 1908 United States 1-Cent William McKinley Postal Card. The message side features a printed invitation issued by Adin A. Hixon on behalf of the historic Worcester County Horticultural Society (originally founded in 1842 and known today for establishing the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill).
Dated July 2, 1908, from Gates Lane, the card invites "Members and Friends" to inspect Hixon's personal botanical grounds. Crucially for transit and railway history enthusiasts, the text outlines precise early 20th-century streetcar schedules, stating: "Cars leave City Hall every 15 minutes for Leicester Line... For Leicester and Spencer on the hour and half hour." The top margin features a short, intriguing period pencil notation reading, "Perhaps would like to have you help assist—".
The front side is hand-addressed to Miss Emma Gibson at North Oxford Depot, Massachusetts. It features a crisp, beautifully struck Worcester, Mass. wavy-line machine cancellation postmark dated July 6, 1908. A wonderful addition for collectors specializing in Massachusetts botanical societies, early New England electric streetcar trolley history, or local Worcester County genealogy.
