Description

Offered is an original presidential framed halftone poster titled “Our Martyrs”. This poster depicts and commemorates the three martyred US presidents - Abraham Lincoln, William McKinley and James Garfield that were killed while in office at the time of the poster’s printing in 1901. This poster was published shortly after President McKinley died on September 14th after being shot on September 6th, 1901. This poster was published by Charles Gustrine & Co in September 1901. Gustrine was a Chicago-based publisher and artist known for producing historical, patriotic, and political prints and lithographs in the early 20th century.

Each of the presidents have a short biography detailing their career highlights as well a quote. Lincoln’s quote is attributed to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton - “Now He Belongs to the Ages”. The quotes for Garfield and McKinley are reported to be their last words. For James Garfield, his last words were, “It is God’s Will, So Be It”. The last words of McKinley were “Goodbye All, Goodbye it is God’s Way His Will Be done Not Ours”.

In the lower right-hand corner is printed “COPYRIGHTED BY CHARLES GUSTRINE & CO. – SEPT. 1901”. In the lower left-hand corner is “BRINKERHOFF & BARNETT ENG. CO. CHI.”. Brinkerhoff & Barnett Engraving Co. was a prominent photoengraving and design firm in Chicago (\"CHI.\") around the turn of the 20th century. Organized in 1900 by Joseph H. Barnett and his partner Brinkerhoff, the company specialized in halftone cuts, illustrations, commercial designs, and map sketching. Because they sold out or dissolved around 1901, items specifically bearing the \"Brinkerhoff & Barnett ENG. CO. CHI.\" stamp or signature are rare as they were not in business very long.

This poster is mounted in what we believe to be the original period correct frame of the day. This black gesso frame is rarely found.

Dimension/size – the visible portion of the poster measures slightly more than 19” x 15”. The frame measures about 26 ½” x 22 ½”. The poster and frame, which is quite solid, weigh about seven pounds three ounces.

Condition – this poster is in fair to good condition. The poster shows some foxing and discoloration as well as some minor wear. The frame, while very impressive, has a few condition issues with missing gesso. Please see photos. We did not attempt to do any restoration on this piece.

About Us

The Amazing Grace on store was opened to assist us in selling the rather extensive estate of a friend\'s mother that we have \"inherited\". Sally collected a variety of things for many years and 95% of the over 1,200 treasures have been in storage for the last 20 years or more. From depression glass to Asian porcelain and carvings to Native American turquiose & silver jewelry, Sally was a very accomplished collector and even had numerous reference books that accompanied her collections. We have since expanded to also sell other \"inherited\" collections as well as estate and garage sale finds.

We fully understand that in order to sell this vast estate we must offer excellent customer service and fair prices in order to earn repeat customers. Our goal is to make sure each and every customer has a positive buying experience and is completely satisfied. While not experts by any means, we will do our best to fully and accurately describe our offerings. We expend a great deal of effort in researching each piece to insure an accurate description and your satisfaction is our highest priority.
