Title:

1899 Niederwald Monument Germany Pioneer Postcard Rhine Rüdesheim Bingen

Description:

Elaborately illustrated German Empire postcard mailed in 1899 and devoted to the Niederwald National Monument above Rüdesheim am Rhein. The multiview design combines a large rendering of the monument and Germania statue with a panoramic Rhine scene, the towns of Rüdesheim and Bingen, river traffic, vineyards, and a smaller view of the Rossel ruin. Printed “Gruss vom National-Denkmal,” it is an attractive example of the highly decorative pioneer-era souvenir postcards produced during the closing years of the nineteenth century.

The Niederwald Monument was erected between 1877 and 1883 to commemorate the unification of the German Empire following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871. Its commanding Germania figure raises the imperial crown while holding a lowered sword, overlooking the Rhine and the wine country surrounding Rüdesheim. By the 1890s the monument had become one of the best-known tourist destinations of the Rhine region, making this postcard an early piece of German travel, monument, and national-history ephemera.

The front is unusually detailed. At lower left is the full monument with Germania, allegorical figures, relief panels, and monumental stairway. Above it appears “Die Rossel,” while the large upper-right scene identifies Bingen and Rüdesheim on opposite sides of the river. Steamers, smaller craft, riverside development, vineyard slopes, and the Rhine landscape are all incorporated into the composition. Grapevines and clusters of grapes frame the title and reinforce the celebrated wine-growing identity of the Rheingau.

The card also features a printed humorous tourist report with headings for “Angekommen” (arrival), “Gesellschaft” (company), “Laune” (mood), “Vergnügen” (enjoyment), “Wetter” (weather), “Weinverhältnisse” (wine conditions), “Befinden” (condition), and “Durst” (thirst). These fields and much of the surrounding image were filled in by the sender in period German handwriting, giving the card considerable social-history character and the appearance of a personal travel diary.

Published by J. B. Hilsdorf of Bingen, as credited on the image side. The reverse bears the printed heading “Deutsche Reichspost. Postkarte” and is franked with a green 5-pfennig German Empire Crown-and-Eagle issue. Five pfennig was the correct domestic postcard rate within the German Empire at the time.

The stamp is tied by a black circular postal cancellation dated in 1899. A large violet oval souvenir cachet reads “National-Denkmal Niederwald” and is dated “29. Juli 1899.” This purple marking is a commemorative visitor or monument handstamp rather than the official postal cancellation, but its matching period date significantly enhances the card as a documented Niederwald visit. A faint receiving or transit marking also appears at lower left on the address side.

The card is addressed within Germany; portions of the recipient’s name and destination are difficult to decipher with confidence because of the light cursive writing and overlapping markings. The extensive handwritten message continues across the picture side in the customary early postcard manner.

A strong early German postcard combining the Niederwald Monument, Germania, Rüdesheim, Bingen, Rhine tourism, wine-country imagery, a dated souvenir cachet, correct 5-pfennig franking, and full 1899 postal use. Particularly suitable for collections of pioneer postcards, the German Empire, Rhine River views, patriotic monuments, architectural history, tourism, postal history, and nineteenth-century social ephemera.
