1896 Letter Weston MO to Minco Indian Territory John C Howe Economic Depression

  • 1896 Manuscript Letter: Weston, Missouri to Minco, Indian Territory

An authentic single-page manuscript letter written on lined paper, dated May 29, 1896, originating from Weston, Missouri and addressed to Mr. J. C. Bonebrake in Minco, Indian Territory (I. T.).

Written during the aftermath of the Panic of 1893, the letter offers a compelling look at personal financial struggle and economic stagnation during the late 19th century in the American West and Indian Territory.

    Weston Mo. May 29, 1896

    Mr. J. C. Bonebrake

    Minco I. T.

    Friend Bonebrake:

Your letter of March 5th received. I am still here doing nothing, everything is awful dull everywhere and it is likely to remain so for some time, it is impossible to get onto anything. I shall remain here until something turns up.

Have written to Mr. Drake but have received no reply, have you heard from him lately? Presume business has not improved with you since your letter of last March and that nothing has shown up that you could put me onto. My address will be here until I can get away, how long that will be I cannot tell.

    Yours truly,

    John C. Howe
