1895 handbillNew York City
produce wholesalerThis is a small broadside or handbill published 130 years ago. It is a sheet which measures 9.5 x 12.5 inches in size, printed on a thin stock of paper, and blank on its back side. It has some old fold creases and and light wear (see photos), but is still in very good and attractive condition. The handbill bears the headline, “The Producers’ Price Current,” and is dated Oct. 22, 1895. It is an extensive price list of the latest daily wholesale price quotations for a wide range of food products from across the country, as compiled by F. W. Palmer, Produce Commission Merchant, 381 Greenwich St. in New York City. It says Palmer’s specialties are butter, cheese and eggs, but his report covers all the main food groups, in detail. In small print, the handbill has sections devoted to:Beans and and Stock
Potatoes
Dressed Poultry
Live Poultry
Fresh
VegetablesThe price list for each section is preceded by comments on the latest market news in these commodities. For example, before listing over two dozen varieties of vegetables, it says:“Receipts of onions to-day 683 bbls. A moderate demand for top grades at about steady prices. Cauliflowers in fair demand and a shade firmer. Lima beans scarce and wanted. Russia turnips easier. Southern string beans in good demand; a few in from Charleston today brought full prices when fine. Celery still in moderate supply, but less active.”In the section on “Game,” prices are quoted for woodcocks, partridges, grouse, quail, English snipe, golden plover, grass plover, small yellow leg snipe, sand snipe, reed birds, venison, wild ducks, and rabbits.
