1893 Woolson Spice "The Spy" Civil War Non-Sport Near Set (43/45) w/ 2 Lincolns!
Description:
Up for sale is a near-complete set of "The Spy," an 1893 Civil War-themed parlor card game issued by the Woolson Spice Company of Toledo, Ohio as an advertising premium for their Lion Coffee brand.
Condition & Completeness:This near-set includes 43 of the 45 pieces from the original game - all 22 numbered subjects are represented, most in their original pair, plus the unnumbered "THE SPY" title/scene card. To reach full completion (45/45), the set needs one additional "Surgeon" and one additional "Knapsack, U.S.A." card.
Both key "Commander in Chief" (Lincoln) cards are present:
- Lincoln #1: small crease at the lower right corner, small spot on the front, middle-left border area. Overall quite presentable.
- Lincoln #2: noticeable crease at the front upper left corner, small spot on the front, middle-left border area.
See the scans of the fronts and backs of both Lincoln cards for exact condition before offerding.
Across the rest of the set, fewer than 20 of the 43 cards show any creasing, and where present it's generally minor. As with any 130+ year-old paper ephemera, please review all photos closely, as condition varies card to card and photos are the final word on what you'll receive.
Details: Each card is hand-illustrated in period pen-and-ink line engraving style with a numbered title (e.g., "5 Commander in Chief," "22 Cannon"), printed on uncoated buff/tan card stock with a blank reverse.
