Vintage 1893U of M photo by then Ann Arbor area photographer J. J. Gibson. His most important work for theUniversity of Michigan was a series of images depicting the campus buildingsand interior views of classrooms and laboratories that he was commissioned totake in 1893. The University had a major exhibition at the 1893 World’sColumbian Exposition in Chicago. The Uof M exhibit was situated between Yale and the MIT, U-M sought to “present tothe visitor a somewhat comprehensive idea of the University as a whole.”
His photographsdepicted the buildings, facilities and apparatus played a key role in theexhibit. Gibson produced richly detailed images captured on 8″ x 10″ glassplate negatives of which this photo was produced.
