Item Description

A highly unique historical association copy of General Greene by Francis Vinton Greene, published in 1893 as part of D. Appleton and Company's Great Commanders series.

This specific volume features a handwritten provenance inscription on the contents page: "P. H. Skipwith Jr. Dec /94".

Peyton Horatio Skipwith Jr. (1848–1926) was the direct great-grandson of the subject of this biography, Major General Nathanael Greene. General Greene's daughter, Cornelia Lott Greene, married Peyton Skipwith in 1802. Their grandson, Peyton H. Skipwith Jr. (a VMI cadet during the Civil War), acquired and signed this comprehensive history of his famous great-grandfather in December 1894, just one year after its publication. This direct family lineage transforms this book into an exceptional piece of American military history.
