FORBES & MITCHELL IN AMERICAN TOBACCO CARDS say, "This is one of the very attractive issues produced by Allen& Ginter in the late 19th century. The set, published around1887, consists of color paintings of famous editors. At thetime these cards were issued, there were no movies, few magazines, and no radio. The written word via newspapers wasone of the major ways people kept in touch. Thus, editorswere more widely recognized than they are today. The onlyname from the series that's still well known is Joseph Pulitzer,and he's famous not as much for his work as he is for thejournalism award named after him (the Pulitzer Prize).The cards are numbered on the back. The set was produced by Philadelphia-based lithographers George Harris &Sons.
