Original handwritten letter dated May 31, 1886, written on ornate Southern Pacific Hotel letterhead from Milan, Tennessee, with H. P. Miller, Proprietor prominently printed at top.
The letter concerns commercial weighing scales and appears to be written by E. A. Rice. Rice discusses problems or complaints involving a platform scale, stating that it has been in use about a year and is now “more out than all practical men can adjust.” He also mentions another scale at Milan and one at Martin, Tennessee, about 35 miles away. The writer refers to the scale being approximately 1½ percent out, wear, and the need for attention or adjustment. The reverse continues the letter and includes the writer's signature.
A very appealing piece of 1880s Tennessee hotel, railroad-era, business and weights-and-measures history, especially desirable for the large decorative Southern Pacific Hotel heading.
Authentic period piece related to family, historyor local heritage - well-suited for historical collections, genealogical /genealogy research, or museum acquisition.Vintage or Antique.
