The great Lick observatory was constructed between 1876 and 1887 (whichmeans it was still under construction when this letter was written), from abequest from James Lick, a carpenter and piano maker, of$700,000.
Lick requested that Santa Clara County construct a \"first-class road\" to the summit,completed in 1876.
Tradition maintains that this road actually has exactly 365turns (this is approximately correct, although uncertainty as to what shouldcount as a turn makes precise verification impossible).
