Instructions and recipes
Up for sale is a rare, 100% original Victorian-era instruction and recipe sheet for the "Mt. Washington" Ice Cream Freezer, manufactured by The White Mountain Freezer Company, Inc. in Nashua, New Hampshire.
Dating from the 1880s to the 1890s, this piece was printed shortly after the company relocated its factory to Nashua in 1881. It features fascinating, step-by-step instructions on the front detailing how to prepare, pack, salt, and hand-churn ice cream using 19th-century techniques.
The reverse side, titled "Ice Cream A Universal Favorite," includes a wonderful collection of authentic period recipes:
• Philadelphia Ice Cream (three distinct historic methods)
• Chocolate Ice Cream (noting the use of vanilla chocolate or Ceylon cinnamon)
• Strawberry Ice Cream (using cheesecloth to strain the fruit pulp)
• Milk Sherbet
• Pineapple Saute
• Orange Sherbet
