1864 Civil War Original Canteen Co B 36th Regiment Wisconsin – Embroidered Cover For Sale

This is a really great velvet-covered original Civil War canteen from 1864. It reads on the front, \"The Old Canteen of 1864 Co. B. 36th Wis.\" It is likely that in the late 1890s, this canteen was covered in velvet and embellished with embroidery, possibly used during a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) encampment or parade.It measures 7.75\" in diameter x 2.5\" thick. The velvet on the front shows some wear, while the back is in slightly better condition. The spout has been pushed down a bit, but it can still be elevated to its original height. Please note that about one-third of the spout is missing. This is a really great historic Civil War item that came out of Wisconsin.Company B of the 36th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Randall in Madison, Wisconsin, mustering into Union service on March 23, 1864. The company fought in the Eastern Theater under the Army of the Potomac, sustaining heavy casualties during the 1864 Overland Campaign before mustering out on July 12, 1865.* * * * * * * * *
