An original 1863 copy of "The President's Hymn: Give Thanks All Ye People," a hymn written for President Abraham Lincoln's proclamation of a national Day of Thanksgiving on November 26, 1863, in the midst of the Civil War. This is thevery first instance of Thanksgiving as a formal, official national holiday in the United States:
The music is about 6 1/2" x 11" folded. It is in very good condition as shown. Note that what appear to be torn corners are just folds that could be ironed out. The paper is still supple, not brittle, and can be read without fear. Very minor wear and staining. Any shadows come from my lights. Displays really well.
On October 3, 1863, President Lincoln issued the following Proclamation and established our modern holiday:I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, …to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving... And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him …, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.
