Original circa 1860 ninth-plate ambrotype photograph on colored glass. In half of its original case (missing its cover). I was informed that only Grand Masters were allowed to wear hats! Also, this image was purchased in California; the style of broad brimmed hat was popular in California at this time, and more accepted as formal / dress attire there than throughout the rest of the US... very good chance this was photographed there.
