1839 The New World Newspaper Rufus Griswold Editor - Edgar Poe Rival:
$68.00

An original copy of the November 30, 1839 Volume 1, Number 6 of The New World, a newspaper edited by Park Benjamin and Rufus W. Griswold.

Rufus Wilmot Griswold was an anthologist, editor, critic, and poet who had a long standing rivalry with Edgar A. Poe. They traded negative criticism (and thinly veiled hostility) of each other\'s works starting with Poe\'s criticism of Griswold\'s anthology The Poets and Poetry of America which only included three of Poe\'s poems, but dozens by others who were friends of Griswold. Poe basically accused Griswold helping out his friends rather than publishing quality work. The rivalry continued even after Poe\'s death as Griswold published wildly inaccurate information about Poe including claims Poe was a drug addict and alcoholic.

This is a \"mammoth\" or \"leviathan\" sized paper that measures 48\" wide when fully opened and 30\" tall.

In very good condition for its age with some cracking at creases and minor discoloration.
