Early handwritten land and agricultural contract letter dated January 17, 1833, written from Chatham, New York, and addressed to the firm STEVENSON & HART. The letter measures approximately 7.5 x 12.25 inches when opened and is written in brown ink on period laid paper, folded in the traditional manner for mailing.

The writer discusses the terms of entering a property and establishing a crop, indicating urgency to take possession in time to plant a spring crop. He mentions that delaying entry until mid-April would defeat his objective of putting in the crop, and offers to pay $200 or more upon entering the premises in advance if necessary to satisfy the contract conditions.

A substantial portion of the letter concerns the legal conveyance of the property, referencing the delivery of the key, execution of the deed, and the expectation that the conveyance would be duly executed, acknowledged, and entered of record in the county where the land lies. The writer also refers to arranging a survey and preparations for the coming agricultural season, hoping that all details of the agreement could be finalized by March.

The reverse shows the mailing folds and docketing identifying the recipients “Stevenson & Hart.” Letters like this document the practical realities of early 19th-century rural land transactions, farming leases, and settlement agreements in upstate New York.

Condition: typical for an early manuscript letter with fold lines, edge wear, and some age toning, but the ink remains strong and the letter is highly legible.
