Pilgrim Glass Company was founded in 1949 by Alfred E. Knobler, a ceramic engineer, after he purchased the Tri-State Glass Manufacturing Company in Huntington, West Virginia. Knobler focused on producing high-quality, hand-crafted art glass at a time when much of the glass industry was moving toward mass production.
In 1956, the company moved to a new plant near Ceredo, West Virginia, where Pilgrim Glass built its reputation for hand-blown crackle glass, decorative vases, bowls, animals, and figurines. The company employed skilled European and Italian glassworkers, which helped elevate both the craftsmanship and design.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Pilgrim became especially well known for its cranberry glass, eventually becoming one of the largest producers of cranberry glass in the world. Their output included both traditional and contemporary designs, often marked with a foil or acid-etched Pilgrim label.
Pilgrim Glass operated for more than 50 years before closing in 2002, when Knobler retired and no buyer was found to continue production. Today, Pilgrim Glass is widely collected, with cranberry glass, crackle pieces, and animal figures being among the most sought after.
