The Joe Camel ControversyThe heart of the campaign relied heavily on Joe Camel, an anthropomorphic, smooth-talking cartoon mascot dressed in tuxedos or leather jackets.While highly effective at boosting sales, it quickly drew fierce criticism. Public health officials, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and the American Medical Association (AMA) targeted the campaign. Studies published in the early 1990s showed that young children recognized Joe Camel just as easily as Mickey Mouse, leading to allegations that RJR was intentionally targeting minors to hook a new generation of smokers. Under massive legal and public pressure, RJR officially retired the Joe Camel character in 1997.
