This gold mask was likely for ceremonial or religious purposes, perhaps worn by a high priest when worshiping their sun god. The gods name has been lost to history but likely relates to the sun god Inti of the later Inca people. It was later found in 1939 among the mangroves of a small Ecuadorian island and has been attributed to theTumaco-La Tolita culture who likely made it sometime between 350 BC and 300 AD.
