Scott Carpenter, one of the original 7 Mercury Astronauts signed the back of this original Waldorf Astoria luncheon menu card on May 22, 1963.
The autograph was obtained personally by my father, a waiter at the luncheon event.
The formal luncheon was held in NYC at the Waldorf Astoria in honor of Astronaut L. Gordon Cooper, Jr., James E. Webb and the Mercury Team.
The menu card is 4 x 6 inches on card stock. It is in "as new" condition preserved in a firm, clear plastic
holder. This unique autograph has been solely in my possession since May 22, 1963.
This is a one-of-a kind autograph of Mercury Astronaut Scott Carpenter.
Scott Carpenter was the second astronaut after John Glenn launched into an orbit of the Earth. Carpenter also was on a Moon mission prior to the first Moon landing by Neil Armstrong.
Most amazing of all, Carpenter also was an aquanaut and lived for 28 days on the ocean bottom off the coast of California in an aquatic living pod.
As a bonus, I will add free of charge a half sheet of uncirculated Mercury Project 4 cent stamps issued in 1962. These 25 stamps shown in the photo will make a very nice framed commemorative with the Scott Carpenter autograph. He was the only person who spent time in space and who also spent several weeks living in a housing pod on the ocean floor. Truly a unique American explorer of outer and inner space.
The menu card is thick, cardboard like paper stock. A cut autograph can be made readily if the personalization of the inscription is unwanted. That makes the autograph usable in many different ways
