Bush crushing the Democratic ticket of former Vice President Walter Mondale and New York Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro in an electoral rout that reshaped modern American politics. Reagan amassed 525 electoral votes to Mondale\'s 13, winning 49 states in one of the biggest landslides in U.S. election history. Encyclopedia Britannica The election was also notable for being the first time a major party had placed a woman on its presidential ticket — Geraldine Ferraro, Mondale\'s running mate. Encyclopedia Britannica Reagan\'s re-election advertising campaign was perhaps one of the most memorable in history; his \"Morning in America\" commercials targeted the hearts of middle America by highlighting economic optimism and national renewal. Bgsu Mondale\'s campaign would also produce one of the most celebrated moments in debate history, when Reagan deflected questions about his age by quipping that he would \"not make age an issue of this campaign\" and would not \"exploit, for political purposes, my opponent\'s youth and inexperience.\" Bgsu The Mondale campaign made a cultural splash as well, with the \"Fritz Busters\" Reagan campaign button serving as a play on the 1984 box office hit Ghostbusters, using Mondale\'s nickname \"Fritz.\" Bgsu Reagan won 58.8 percent of the popular vote and defeated Mondale by a popular vote margin of eighteen points, remaining the only presidential candidate since Richard Nixon in 1972 to win at least 55 percent of the popular vote by a margin greater than 10 points.
