During Presidential Reconstruction, several northern missionary societies opened schools for African Americans in the South immediately following the Civil War. Some northern missionary societies also identified a need for free schools for poor white children. One such organization was the Massachusetts Soldiers Memorial Society, organized in 1865.
Offering a two-piece grouping, one being a four-page flyer issued on the day of President Lincoln’s death, which states, “Today the same wires bring us the sad news of the death of that great Magistrate, the last and greatest martyr of all ! — the Pilot to the Nation’s Ship struck down in the hour of the Nation’s triumph…”
The second item is a 32-page 1866 (first annual) report that details the work the Society has done during its first year. In his Directors’ Report the Society’s Secretary Rev. E.E. Hale states, in small part, “The first call for a preliminary meeting of those interested in the Society was issued on the day when we heard the news of the President’s death, in the midst of the first gloom which shrouded the glories of our victories…In memory of the sufferings of the past; in memory especially of the brave who had died; in memory of all the associations, sacred and tender, of those four years of agony,—we bound ourselves together in this Society…”
The four-page flyer is in excellent condition as is the 32-page report. The report has minor foxing and toning and is bound nicely in yellow wrappers. It has a couple of edge chips.
