WilliamBabington Maxwell(1866–1938) was a successfulBritish novelist and playwright. Born on 4 June 1866, he was the thirdsurviving child and second eldest son of novelistMary Elizabeth Braddon. Though nearly 50years old at the outbreak of theFirst WorldWar, he was accepted as a lieutenant in theRoyalFusiliersand served in France until 1917. He wroteTheLast Man In, a drama, produced 14 March 1910, at theRoyalty Theatre, Glasgow, by theScottishRepertory Company; and, withGeorge Paston(i.e.Emily Morse Symonds), a farce,The Naked Truth, which was firstplayed atWyndham's Theatre, London in April 1910, and inwhichCharles Hawtreyplayed BernardDarrell.New International Encyclopedia
