Antique 1890s Green Glass Victory Codd Neck Soda Bottle Original Marble 5314: $64.99
ANTIQUE LATE-VICTORIAN / EDWARDIAN EMERALD GREEN GLASS \"VICTORY\" CODD-NECK SODA BOTTLE – ORIGINAL MARBLE INTACTUp for sale/sale is a beautiful, highly collectible genuine antique emerald green Codd-neck soda and mineral water bottle. Dating from the late 1890s to early 1900s, this bottle features the historic and revolutionary internal marble closure system invented by Hiram Codd in 1872.Historical Significance: Before the invention of the crown cap, carbonated beverage makers used internal glass marbles to seal their drinks. The carbonation pressure inside the bottle pushed the glass marble upward against a rubber gasket in the lip, locking in the carbonation. To open it, a drinker would use a small wooden plunger to push the marble down into the neck chambers, where tiny glass pinches caught the ball so it wouldn\'t block the liquid while pouring. Because children in the late 19th century routinely smashed these bottles to harvest the marbles for street games, intact survivors are incredibly hard to find!Features & Identifiers: - Stunning Color: Blown in a rich, vibrant deep emerald green glass that catches the light beautifully on a windowsill. Green glass variants are highly sought after compared to common pale aqua or clear versions.
- Original Closure: Features the original glass marble still perfectly trapped inside the upper neck chamber.
- Embossing: Boldly embossed on the front panel with the classic \"VICTORY\" brand name.
- Base Markings: The underside base features a crisp, embossed industrial mold number \"5314\" alongside a raised circular ring logo [image_nEHfuO.png].
- Dimensions: Stands at just over 8.5 inches tall with a base diameter of approximately 2.5 inches [image_4VL687.png, image_DqxI5l.png].
Condition Note: This century-old bottle is in beautiful antique condition. The glass retains excellent clarity with wonderful historical character, including small factory air bubbles (seed bubbles) trapped in the glass matrix from the original manufacturing process. There are no chips, deep cracks, or major fractures. The interior shows typical minor vintage cloudiness/shelf wear consistent with its age and historical excavation.
