Born in Melbourne into a musical family, she began drawing while travelling with her mother on theatrical and musical tours. She attended life-drawing classes as a teenager, worked early as a commercial artist and illustrator, and moved to London after the Second World War, where she studied at St Martin’s School of Art.Mendoza became known principally for oil portraits distinguished by direct observation, strong composition, and close attention to the character and physical presence of her sitters. Her subjects included Queen Elizabeth II, whom she painted on several occasions, as well as Prince Philip, Diana, Princess of Wales, Margaret Thatcher, John Major, Corazon Aquino, musicians including Jacqueline du Pré and Yehudi Menuhin, and numerous figures from British cultural, civic, and professional life. Alongside formal commissions, she frequently painted people encountered in ordinary settings, reflecting her belief that portraiture should give equal attention to subjects outside public life.A member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Mendoza exhibited widely and taught portrait painting. Her work entered public and institutional collections including the National Portrait Gallery, the Parliamentary Art Collection, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters’ People’s Portraits collection at Girton College, Cambridge, and several British universities, regimental museums, and civic bodies. Among her best-known large-scale works is House of Commons, 1986, a group portrait representing hundreds of Members of Parliament. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire and an Officer of the Order of Australia in recognition of her contribution to portraiture.
