WINNIPEG STADIUM
Winnipeg Stadium, affectionately known as “The House That Jack Built” in honor of legendary Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Jack Jacobs, served as the home of the CFL team for over six decades. Opened in 1953, the stadium was located in the Polo Park area of Winnipeg, Manitoba. With an initial capacity of approximately 15,000, it expanded over the years to accommodate more than 30,000 fans, making it a central hub for sports and entertainment in the city.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers called the stadium home from 1953 until 2012. During this time, the team experienced periods of dominance in the CFL, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s, with stars like Jacobs, Ken Ploen, and Leo Lewis thrilling fans with their skill and determination. The stadium was the site of several iconic moments, including Grey Cup playoff games and countless rivalries with teams like the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Winnipeg Stadium wasn’t just a football venue—it was a multi-purpose facility that hosted soccer matches, concerts, and other community events. It was the site of significant events, including CFL Grey Cups and international soccer fixtures, further solidifying its importance in Canadian sports culture. The stadium’s spartan design and open-air seating contributed to its reputation as a tough venue for players and fans alike, especially during Winnipeg’s famously cold fall and winter months.
By 2013, the Blue Bombers moved to the newly constructed IG Field, leaving Winnipeg Stadium to be eventually demolished. Despite its absence, the memories of Winnipeg Stadium endure, celebrated as the stage for countless triumphs, legendary players, and the passionate fans who made it one of the CFL’s most storied venues.
