1965β1969 CASE XX USA 516-5 GENUINE STAG HUNTING KNIFE π₯
π¦ **Exceptional Old Stag **
This is an outstanding vintage Case XX USA pattern 516-5 fixed-blade hunting knife, measuring approximately 9 1/2 inches overall with a substantial 5 1/8-inch blade.
The CASE XX / USA stamp dates this example to the 1965β1969 era, placing it among the desirable pre-dot Case knives produced before the familiar 1970s dating system.
And the genuine stag on this knife is exceptional.
Both covers display tremendous natural character, with deep bark, ridges and wonderfully varied coloration ranging from warm golden amber and caramel to rich dark brown. One side presents lighter golden tones with dramatic bark running through the center, while the opposite side is considerably darker and deeply textured. Together they give this old Case hunter exactly the rugged character collectors look for in genuine stag.
The carbon steel blade is equally impressive. At approximately 5 1/8 inches, it remains exceptionally full with no observed blade loss, retaining a beautiful sweeping hunting profile and bright polished finish. Under magnification, extremely light evidence of a previous edge touch-ups can be observed, consistent with only a few light passes across a stone. It is subtle enough that it takes close inspection to detect.
The knife is solid, tight and extremely well made throughout. The stag remains firmly fitted, the guard and distinctive hooked pommel are secure, and the entire knife has the substantial feel expected from a quality American-made Case hunting knife of this period.
The metal fittings show honest evidence of age and handling, including scattered fine scratches and surface marks. Some green verdigris/patina is visible around portions of the guard and hardware, particularly where the metal meets the stag. This has been left visible rather than aggressively cleaned and can be clearly examined in the close-up photographs.
Included is the pictured period correct Case-marked brown leather sheath. The sheath shows age and use, including surface wear, marks and normal aging of the leather and hardware, but remains an attractive and appropriate companion to the knife.
What makes this example stand out is the combination of exceptional genuine stag, an extraordinarily full carbon blade, tight construction, desirable 1965β1969 CASE XX USA stamping and the accompanying Case leather sheath.
It is an impressive survivor from the era when a Case hunting knife was built first and foremost to be a serious working toolβand finding one approximately six decades later with this much blade and this kind of stag is increasingly difficult.
π Please examine all photographs carefully, including the detailed photographs of both stag handles, pins, guard, pommel, tang stamp, 516-5 pattern stamp, blade, spine, edge and leather sheath. They are an important part of the description and provide the best representation of the knifeβs condition.
