If you asked someone to picture the telephone sitting on a private detective’s desk in a 1930s movie, this is pretty much what they’d picture.This is an authentic Western Electric D1 desk telephone with the fantastic early E1 “spit-cup” handset, a design used during the 1930s and immediately recognizable as one of the classic American telephones of the prewar era.This particular style has become an icon of the era. Western Electric 202-type telephones are still sought out as period props, and the model even appears in the classic Twilight Zone episode “Night Call.”Restore it. Or don’t.There are collectors and specialists who completely restore these phones.
