Antique 1892 R.F. Johnson Copper Double Inkwell Desk Set with Mechanical Servant Bel
lHistorical Significance & Provenance This museum-tier desk set features the authentic, stylized maker signature \"R.F. Johnson\" on one insert and the matching patent mark \"Pat. June 21, 92\" on the other. This exact model aligns with the United States Patent Office design issued on June 21, 1892. Known for high-end casting work, Johnson designed this modular configuration to seamlessly blend intricate botanical artwork with functional desktop utility. The Medical & Apothecary Iconography A standout feature of this particular set is the inclusion of specialized allegorical copper panels wrapping around the side faces of the inkwell reservoirs. One primary panel explicitly depicts the Bowl of Hygieia, featuring two symmetrical mythological serpents arching upward to drink from a central chalice. Because this is the universal historical symbol of pharmacy, the apothecary, and healing, this desk stand was undoubtedly a luxury commission or presentation piece for a late-Victorian physician, medical scholar, or prominent pharmacist.Design & Structural FeaturesThe Main Chassis: Crafted with an exceptionally dense, multi-tiered motif of hand-detailed copper roses, lifelike botanical leaves, and tightly twisted briar vines. The Mythological Side Panels: High-relief panels featuring a fierce, scaled Sea Serpent/Dragon navigating textured ocean waves, alongside a classic Gothic Green Man / North Wind Mascaron face. The Removable Wells: Twin heavy-cast copper inkwells designed with ornate ruffled acanthus borders and a roped center rim.
