Vintage LANCASTER & SANDLAND Ltd. Hanley, England 'The Jolly Boatman' Sandland Ware Demitasse Flat Cup & Saucer Set.Pattern Description: English Village & River Scene, Smooth, Gold Trim. Made in Hanley, England. Discontinued from unknown dates of production. Company History: Lancaster & Sandland Ltd was a manufacturer of earthenware at the Dresden works at an area named Tinkersclough, in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent from ca. 1944 until 1968. The Lancaster family had been involved in pottery manufacture from 1887 in a company called Lancaster & Barker. In 1944 the business was renamed Lancaster & Sandland. The company went into voluntary liquidation in November 1968. Maker's Marks: These each have the 'SandLand Ware [Handshake] LANCASTER & SANDLAND Ltd. Hanley, England' printed marks that were used from ca. 1949 until the early 1950s, possibly as late as 1955. Measurements: the Cup is 2-1/4" in Height x 2" Width x 2-3/4" Length (at Handle); the Saucer is 4-1/4" in Width. Condition: Very good condition for their age. There are no chips, cracks or repairs. Fine crazing exists over each piece, adding to their vintage appearance. The gold trim is shiny and bright and shows very little wear. Very light shelf wear to the soles. See photos
