Pin commemorates the official beginning of the U.S. Postal Service stamp released on July 1st, 1971. Prior to this date, it had been known as the U.S. Post Office, however a 1970 postal workers’ strike demonstrated the need for change. To celebrate the reform, President Richard M. Nixon proclaimed July 1st as National Postal Service Day and the 8¢ first-class postage stamp was released simultaneously all over the country.
