It has been said that “canoe racinghas been around as long as there have been 2canoes.” While outriggercanoeswere not invented in Hawaii, the sport ofcanoe racingcertainly was, called hei hei wa'a, and was practiced widely amongHawaiianchiefs for sport and recreation, often placing bets on the outcome.
The missionaries who arrived in 1820 discouragedcanoe racingbecause of its gambling aspects and almost naked paddlers. However, canoe raceswere still held duringKamehamehaV's reign from 1863 to 1872. King Kalakaua revived the sport in 1875, andcanoe racestook place in November 1875 to celebrate his birthday.
