Drinking beer is one of the distinctive street culture elements of the people in Hanoi. That draft beer mug, though cheap, has its own unique charm and even becomes a "refreshing" beverage for people during the summer.

However, few notice that most beer places typically use only one type of mug. That's the glass draft beer mug, with its distinctivegreenish-blue, milky-white, and slightly opaque appearance. When touched, the entire mug feels textured. When brought up to the eyes, one can see thousands upon thousands of bubbles enveloping the interior of the mug, like beer bubbles gradually dissolving within the light blue glass.

In reality, this mug has been around for over 40 years.

Previously, during the difficult subsidized period, despite draft beer being considered a luxury, the state-owned Mậu dịch quốc doanh beer stores were always crowded with customers every evening. The sight of hundreds of people patiently waiting and then leaving disappointed because the beer ran out before their turn wasn't uncommon.

Back then, people in Hanoi used various types of cups and small bowls. In 1976, artist Lê Journalist, who was working at the Central Industrial Union's Technical Department, was assigned the task of designing a beer mug to meet the people's needs.

Prior to that, he had spent a long time studying and working in the field of fine arts in Germany.

He shared with VietNam newspaper: "I went to Germany at the age of 12 to study secondary school, and then I was transferred to the Camera and Kinowerke Dresden Vocational School. This place gave me the skill of precise and exquisite mechanical work, which provided me with a practical foundation to excel in design later on. After 3 years of studying in Dresden, I offer farewell to the romantic Elbe River in Dresden, the beauty of Germany, and returned to the aroma of afternoon smoke and the taste of home-cooked food in my hometown."

Less than an hour after being given the task, the shape of the mug appeared on the drawing and three days later, the first"legendary" draft beer mug was officially produced at the Dân Chủ Glass Cooperative.

Artist Lê Journalist recalled: "On the drawing, I designed the mug in a cone shape, with a wide mouth and a small base to make stacking convenient. The body of the mug has a rounded rim for a comfortable grip. The mug is crafted from recycled glass, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective... It's also designed to be sturdy enough that it won't break or chip easily when touched. The mug has a capacity of half a liter, as during that time, purchasing government-subsidized beer was limited to one mug perperson per line, so the larger design was intended to reduce inconvenience."

The process of making the beer mug is relatively simple, relying mainly on the health and technique of the craftsmen. The shattered glass is crushed into small pieces, removing impurities, then placed in a furnace at 1,800 degrees Celsius for 6 hours. When the glass is molten, the craftsman uses a long pipe about 1.5 meters to pull out the glass and uses air to blow and shape the mug. The mug is then trimmed, the mouth is rounded, and it is left to cool in ashes for 12 - 15 hours...

The production of the green beer mug in the 80s - 90s became the main source of income for many glass cooperatives. In Hanoi, there was the Thanh Đức Glass Factory on Trương Định Street specializing in mug production. By 2017, the glass blowing craft in Xối Trì, Nam Thanh Commune, Nam Trực District (Nam Định) still had 3 households maintaining the craft of making beer mugs, producing an average of 1,500 mugs per day.

When the green beer mug product was introduced, the Ministry of Trade and Industry was the only place that purchased and wholesaled to consumers. The price of each mug at that time was only 500 dong/mug; wholesale to beer shops was about 2.05 dong/mug. Currently, the Gầm Cầu wholesale market (Hanoi) is known as the sole distribution point for mugs throughout Hanoi andsome neighboring provinces and cities. The wholesale price ranges from 6,000 -6,500 dong/mug, and the retail price is around 10,000 dong/mug.
