Rare c1910 RPPC Photo Postcard Jennings Michigan Baseball Team Players UniformThis rare postcard depicts the Jennings, Michigan baseball team c1910. This is a rare piece. At the time of writing this, it's the only item of this team available for sale anywhere online.Jennings is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Missaukee County in the U.S. state of Michigan.
Jennings was a lumbering center founded by Austin and William Mitchell, who named it for William Jennings Bryan. A post office opened on March 8, 1883, with J. Frank Schryer as the first postmaster. The office was discontinued on July 31, 1956. Jennings was a terminus of the Missukee spur of the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad, with a junction on the main line named Round Lake.
The town of Jennings didn't flourish until 1882, when William and Austin Mitchell came to the mill site. Both nephews of George Mitchell, a logging businessman in Cadillac, William and Austin began their own venture in Jennings by purchasing a tract of timber at Crooked Lake as well as timber north and west of the town with business partner Joe Murphy. They quickly acquired Dewings' original mill and built a larger one in the same location. The Mitchell brothers bought out their partner in 1885.
The brothers' mill ran six days a week, night and day, and at its peak employed more than 600 people. The men later expanded their enterprise by establishing a chemical plant that manufactured charcoal, acetate of lime, and wood alcohol. They also opened a factory that made beech and maple flooring. The plant was the largest producer of flooring in the world at the time, and was the first in the country to produce both types of wood flooring.
As the Mitchell Brothers Company grew, so too did Jennings. By 1905, Jennings boasted a population of 2,000, dozens of company-built houses, and a department store, hotel, school, town hall, opera house, numerous churches, and a semi-professional baseball team that competed with neighboring teams every summer. A roller-skating rink was even erected.
Unfortunately, this boom period didn't last. In the absence of strict government regulations, companies bought up land and depleted its natural resources at an alarming rate. By the 1920s, 92% of Michigan's forests had disappeared.
It has been called Michigan's largest ghost town, even though it wasn't abandoned completely. Nowadays if you get out of your vehicle and walk through the area, you'll see sidewalks that go past empty lots where there were once stores, and some stores that have been turned into homes. Some neighborhood streets have become weeded over, and foundations from former homes & businesses are hidden in the foliage.
In the decades after much of Jennings was relocated, no new industry entered the community. But that didn't stop many former loggers and their families from returning to celebrate its legacy.Add this worthy piece to your collection today.
