Approximate size: 5.4 inches x 3.4 inches

Lyons Tea, a product of J. Lyons and Co., has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. The company was founded in 1884 by Joseph Lyons and his brothers-in-law, Isidore and Montague Gluckstein. The first Lyons teashop opened in Piccadilly, London in 1894.

By 1909, they had developed into a chain of teashops, becoming a staple of the High Street in the UK. The teashops provided tea and coffee, along with a variety of food choices including hot dishes, sweets, and buns, cakes, and rolls. Around the year 1910, Lyons Tea was already being sold in these teashops.

The company also ran high-class restaurants and hotels, including the Strand Palace, which opened in 1909. In 1918, to increase sales in northern England, Lyons bought the old established tea company Horniman & Sons. This acquisition likely expanded the reach and popularity of Lyons Tea during this period.

So, around the year 1910, Lyons Tea was being served in the company’s teashops and was part of the broader J. Lyons and Co. conglomerate that included restaurant chain stores, food manufacturing, and hotels.

At one point, The Lyons Tea shop fed 300,000 daily with 120 locations, according to the shown newspaper article.

The first and second reference photos are newspaper clipping printed in theDeseret evening news (Great Salt Lake City [Utah]), July 27, 1907, (Last Edition, Part Two).
