RARE Hammond Remodeled No.1 typewriter, ca.1887. This example was remodeled/upgraded at the factory with a lot of the No.2's features except for the turret. Serial numbered 3573 REM.
Cosmetically, the typewriter is excellent. Other than needing a basic polish, it already displays beautifully. It is complete. Minimal nickel loss and equally minimal signs of superficial rust. Most notably, both the large and small feed rollers have old, split rubber.
Functionally, other than the rubber, this Hammond needs to be tuned. The carriage is very tight as if it needs to be lubricated. There is plenty of tension in the mainspring. The shuttle works well.
An original case is included. The wood base and cover have survived really well.
Again, this is an EXCELLENT example of a RARE model which already displays beautifully.
