Arthur Hendrick Vandenberg(March 22,1884– April 18, 1951) was an American politician who served as aUnited States SenatorfromMichiganfrom 1928 to 1951. A member of theRepublicanParty, heparticipatedin the creation of theUnited Nations. He is best known for leading the RepublicanParty from a foreign policy of isolationism to one of internationalism, andsupporting theCold War, theTruman Doctrine, theMarshall Plan, andNATO.He served asPresident pro tempore of the United States Senatefrom1947 to 1949. Born and raised inGrand Rapids, Michiganina family ofDutch Americans,Vandenberg began his career as a newspaper editor and publisher. In 1928,Republican GovernorFred W. GreenappointedVandenberg to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy that arose after the deathofWoodbridge Nathan Ferris.Vandenberg won election to a full term later that year and remained in theSenate until his death in 1951. He supported the earlyNew Dealprograms but came to oppose most ofPresidentFranklin D. Roosevelt'sdomestic policies. During the late 1930s, Vandenberg also opposed the UnitedStates' becoming involved inWorld War IIand urged Roosevelt to reach anaccommodation withJapan. Vandenberg abandoned hisisolationism, however, after the Japaneseattack on Pearl Harbor. Hebecame chairman of theSenate Foreign Relations Committeein 1947 and supportedDemocratic PresidentHarry Truman's Cold Warpolicies, asserting that "politics stops at the water's edge."Vandenberg also served as the Chairman of the Republican Senate Conference from1945 to 1947 and as thepresident pro tempore of the Senatefrom 1947 to 1949. Heunsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for president in 1940 and 1948.
