RARE 1905 Hofbrau Haus German Restaurant Menu 30th & Broadway NY August Janssen:
$99.00

Illustrated Original 1905 Menu from August Janssen's Famous Hofbrau Haus RestaurantBroadway at 30th Street New York City, Madison Square opposite Daly's Theatre.
I have not seen many of these menus for sale, and the ones that I have seen are souvenir menus. This must be an original menu as used in the restaurant, as there is a paper attached stating that the menu is NOT for sale, and that new copies in wrappers can be obtained from the headwaiter for the price of 25 cents. This is also the earliest menu that I have seen for sale, dated 1905.
The first page says in German, "5th Improved Edition" in small print at the bottom.
There are some condition related issues, as the paper on the outside of the menu has some small tears. The outer cover is made of a heavy paper material and has some creases like it was folded at one time. The inner pages also have some creasing in the same areas as the cover. With an item this rare these issues are negligible. The menu is bound with twine, which seems to be original.
The illustrations on the menu must be seen to be believed. The outside cover is lithographed with a motif in the style of Imperial Germany. The inside has fun and comical illustrations printed on heavy paper.
Please contact me with any questions that you may have about the menu.
The shipping cost will include insurance and careful packaging for this rare menu.
A little History:
"Janssen wants to see you!" was the famous slogan of August Janssen's Hofbrau Haus. It had once been of New York's most famous German establishments -- in a city that once had a lot of them.
29 July 1916, Puck, pg. 10:I admired the sterling portrait of August Janssen by William M. Chase, a sober, dignified work of art, without any psychological fuss or feathers, though sufficiently characteristic to set pealing in your memory the thrice famous phrase: "Janssen wants to see you!" Now you may see him framed, but not November 1939, New York Times, pg. 21:AUGUST L. JANSSEN,RESTAURATEUR, 72
He Made Famous the Slogan,"Janssen Wants to See You,"for His Hofbrau Haus
A ROTARY CLUB FOUNDER
He Also Helped to Organize theBroadway Association --Came to America at 20
August L. Janssen, one of the best-known restaurateurs in the city, died yesterday in the Lenox Hill Hospital after an illness of several weeks. He was 72 years old and lived at 137 East Thirty-eighth Street.
From 1898 to 1938, the famous slogan, "Janssen Wasn't to See You," drew thousands of New Yorkers to the Hofbrau Haus at Broadway and Thirtieth Street, opposite the old Daly's Theatre.
It was Mr. Janssen's custom to sound a bell whenever a new keg of beer was tapped, and as many as thirty were kept on tap at one time.(...)In 1938 the historic Hofbrau Haus was merged with new quarters in the Graybar Building at Lexington Avenue and Forty-fourth Street, which had been opened in 1935. Mr. Janssen also had restaurants at Broadway and Fifty-second Street and in New Haven, Conn. In 1928 he opened five places in Paris, France, which he operated until Hofbrau Haus restaurant was a well-known German restaurant located at 3 East 30th Street in New York City. It was opened in the early 1900s and became a popular spot for New Yorkers to enjoy German cuisine and beer.
The Hofbrau Haus restaurant was known for its lively atmosphere and traditional Bavarian decor, with long wooden tables and benches for communal seating. The menu featured classic German dishes such as schnitzel, sausages, and sauerkraut, as well as a wide selection of German beers.
However, the restaurant faced financial difficulties in the 1950s and 1960s, and it eventually closed its doors in 1965. Despite its closure, the Hofbrau Haus restaurant is still remembered as a beloved institution in New York City's culinary history, and it is often cited as an example of the city's rich cultural heritage.
