The Chefs-D'Oeuvre D'Art of the Exposition Universelle, Paris 1878Large format elephant folio art exhibit book with engraved plates and prints with English language descriptions.This handsome book was published in Philadelphia and probably printed there. It illustrates the Chief Works of Art of the 1878 International Exhibition (World's Fair / Exposition) held in Paris that year. There are a dozen pages in the front with building descriptions and illustrations. That is followed by 138 pages text and 48 steel engraved plates on heavyweight India paper, plus 28 wood engraved plates & 85 text illustrations (illuminations, initials, and portraits), bound in original leather binding.
Condition: The binding was in bad shape so I used archival library tape in front and back to hold it all together.There is some light brown water damage in one corner that is seen on about half of the pages. That can be seen in a couple of of my photos. There is minor foxing on some pages. The plates are crisp and generally clear for that age.
This is a showcase featuring academic painting and sculpture of the period. Artists included are: E.A. Bayard, E.P. Berne-Bellecour, F.A. Bridgman, E. Burne-Jones, E. Butti, J. DeVriendt, Gustave Dore, P. Dubois, R. Fontana, F. Gerome, J.P. Laurens, Lecomte-du-Nouy, J.E. Milais, G. Moreau, C. Verlat, C. Vernet, etc. etc.
