Vintage Onoto \'THE PEN\' De La Rue plunger-fill Fountain Pen #6233/44 in Black barleycorn chased celluloid - Extra Fine-Fine 2-tone 14k #5Nib with just a little flex
Between the early 1880s and 1958 (alittle later if Australian production is included), the company De LaRue manufactured and marketed the stylish, and generally somewhatconservative, writing instruments that created the now legendaryreputation the brand enjoys amongst fountain pen connoisseurs. Duringthose early years the De La Rue family expanded what was originally asuccessful stationery company, producing envelopes and stamps, intofountain pen manufacture by means of a shrewdly envisioned and highlyaggressive marketing and advertising strategy that yielded phenomenalsuccess. This early rise of the De La Rue brand led to them justlyadopting the title \'THE PEN\' as their chosen trademark.
Very conservative in nature, De LaRue resisted the wider market trend towards the lever-fillingmechanism for over a decade following Sheaffer\'s successful patentingof this more practical and easy-to-service filling method in 1912.The elegant piston-filling mechanism remained De La Rue\'s preferredfilling method until it succumbed to market pressure in the mid 1920sand brought out its own lever-filling models.
The late 1920s saw the company moveaway from purely conservative black (or very costly precious metal)models and incorporate a number of very attractively coloured modelsin celluloid.
From the earliest pens in hardrubber to the celluloid models, rolled and solid gold models, overlays and solid silver, vintage De La Rue fountain pens areamongst the most sought after by fountain pen collectors and usersalike; the former prizing their great quality, beauty and historicalsignificance and the latter enjoying their superb writingperformance. De La Rue pens in good condition are relatively rare andabsolutely worth the premium attached to that rarity.
This 6233 is a stunning pen. Chasing looks perfect and all imprints are deep and crisp. The pocket clip shows some plating loss but still displays well. Fully serviced working order.
CAP
The cap sports a gold plated \"DLR\"-logo clip and shows some tarnish. The medium gold plated cap band is unbrassed. There are no cracks or dings or repairs and the surface condition of the celluloid is excellent.
SECTION AND BARREL
Surface condition of the barrel and section are free of all but the most microscopic scratches. Surface condition is outstanding. The barrel imprint is deep and crisp, as is the model number on the blind cap: See photos below.
FILLING MECHANISM
The plungerfilling mechanism has been dismantled and cleaned and both cork seals andrubber plunger washer replaced and the seal is now very effective, workingperfectly as it should
NIB
A14k #5 2-tone De La Ruenib with a slightly unusual Extra Fine-to-Fine profile with just a very slight semi-flex.Please see writing sample below for an idea of how this nib writes. Please note, I now do FILL tests rather than DIP tests on all pens I list as this allows me to better check ink flow. I flush with water afterwards but it is possible that traces of ink remain. Ink used is a 50:50 mix of Waterman Serenity Blue : Waterman Tender Purple and paper is a Clairefontaine pad.
OVERALL
This Onoto The Pen 6233/44is clearly a stunning penand would make an excellent daily writer for the person that enjoys a very fine nib. The asking price reflects the surface imperfection of the pocket clip. It\'s not for nothing that Onoto has a reputation for quality and sophistication and this pen embodies both characteristics very well indeed.Length Capped: 131mm
