Specially designed to provide acoustic or electronic communicationin challenging situations, the CCU, or also known as the Intercommunication Unit, is a small, hand-carried device that is clipped or hung on the uniform. Weighing approximately two pounds, the unit plugs into the wearer's oxygen mask microphone via the helmet communication cord and is powered by a standard 9-volt battery. Its rugged box contains a small speaker for acoustic broadcasting in quiet areas and a microphone to pick up acoustic energy for the helmet earcups.
