Decius, hailing from the region of the former Yugoslavia, modern-day Serbia, marked the onset of a series of emperors known as the "Illyrian" or "Barracks" emperors. A distinguished senator who had held various prominent positions such as consul, governor, and urban prefect of Rome, Decius ascended to the imperial throne with the support of troops quelling a Danube revolt. In the year A.D. 249, he issued a decree mandating all inhabitants of the Roman Empire to make sacrifices to the gods. This edict marked the initiation of the first empire-wide persecution of Christians, a departure from previous localized persecutions that were contingent on specific regional conditions.
